Kidney disease can be both the cause and consequence of hypertension (high blood pressure), a potentially serious condition.

A new clinical patient study aims at a spatially resolved quantification of functional parameters of perfusion and excretion in the kidney. These characterizations have traditionally been performed using methods from nuclear medicine which involve radioactive agents. The new study will use three-dimensional magnetic resonance tomography and non-radioactive contrast agents. The analysis of the four-dimensional spatio-temporal data should highlight regional differences and allow for automated classification of the observed functional characteristics.
